Volunteers Caring for Tarella and its Grounds – New Volunteers always Welcome

BMHS relies on a great team of volunteers to support the work of the Society.

Many volunteers, like Ted, work to preserve the Society’s collections of material or carry out research. Some volunteers assist on Open Days and Meeting and Talk Days to ensure that they can run smoothly.

Other BMHS members, like those on our Building and Grounds Maintenance Team, have been hard at work over recent weeks to ensure that our buildings and grounds are preserved for future generations.

Jim, our building maintenance coordinator, is currently working on the front porch of Tarella. Sponginess was detected in the floor and one of the bearers was found to be rotten in places. Jim is working to repair it and other problems observed in the verandah.

Max is mowing the top lawn. Our large grounds are a real challenge for Max and his small mower, but he goes about his work with great verve and enthusiasm.

We also have a gardening team who meet, weather permitting, at 10am on the Saturday before each monthly Open Day to tidy the gardens. Other members of the team come and work individually on either Tuesdays or Fridays. Photos of their work will be added later. Penny, Rod, Lyn, Fiona and the rest of the team would love to have new members of the team.

Stephen, hiding behind the camera, is working to restore the wrought iron fence at the front of the property. His efforts are making a noticeable difference to the appearance of the fence. Note the reduction in the metal support just before it enters the rock work. Corrosion is due to pine needles.

There are many different opportunities to support our Society. If you would like to help, please contact us by phone, email or in person. Some members, to whom you could also talk about volunteering, are always present on Tuesdays and Friday between 10am and 2pm. Also, on Open Days (last Sunday of each month, between 10am and 3pm, except December) and Meeting Days (first Saturday of each month from 10am except January) is also a good time to talk to members about how you could volunteer.

Come and join our merry band of volunteer members, you won’t regret it.
