Christmas Trivia and Sausage Sizzle 2024

On Saturday 7 December 2024, BMHS members enthusiastically participated in the Society’s annual Christmas Trivia and Sausage Sizzle.

Everybody arrived weighed down with snacks and drinks for their tables and salads and sweets for the lunch to follow.

Volunteers par boiled sausages the previous day and and personned the BBQ with great skill in the morning. Thanks to John, Ted and Stephen for their great effort.

Robyne and Fiona organised the prizes and the raffle while many members pitched in on the morning, both in the kitchen and preparing our meeting room for the Trivia session.

Most importantly, our fabulous quiz host, Sue Collins, owner of local tour company, Mountains Tales, arrived with questions, both challenging and easy, to cause the grey matter of all members to fizz excitedly while seeking enlightenment.

The questions gave rise to much interesting debate. Was Queen Salote of Tonga or Queen Elizabeth 2  the first reigning monarch to visit Australia’s shores? Could the women working in agriculture during WW2 be known as as both the Womens’ Land Army and the Land Girls.

Sue was ably assisted by her two young helpers who marked the answer  sheets and scored.

The trivia contest was closely fought with only half a point separating some of the teams. Congratulations to Jan, Julieann, Jennie and Mark, our illustrious winners.

A number of folk responded to the appeal to wear 1990’s attire in recognition of the 30th anniversary of the opening of the Hobby’s Reach Research Rooms on December 3. As well, members brought photos of themselves in the 1990s. Looking at the photos proved quite sobering for many of those attending. So recent, yet so much has changed.

Lyn Robertson was judged the best dressed 1990s person by our President, Phil Hammon.

Glenys was the successful winner of the Christmas raffle.

The day concluded with the sausage sizzle, salad and sweets lunch.

Thank you to all those who attended, making this day a wonderful community event celebrating the importance of History to all of us.

Merry Christmas to all members and friends of the Blue Mountains Historical Society. We look to 2025 in the hope that it will be a wonderful year for us all.
