BMHS June News Bulletin

Dear BMHS Members,

It’s hard to believe that we have already passed the shortest day of the year and the days are beginning to stretch.

Gardening Bee – Saturday 29 June 2024

On Saturday 29 June we have our regular garden bee. If you are able to spare a couple of hours in the Tarella garden at 99 Blaxland Road, Wentworth Falls, we’d love to see you. The Gardening Bee usually starts around 10am.

Open Day – Sunday 30 June 2024

Our June Open Day is this coming Sunday, June 30, from 10am until 3pm. Any time you could spare to assist in the running of the day would be greatly appreciated. It would also be lovely if you could share some goodies with us for morning or afternoon tea for volunteers and visitors.  Please give me (Robyne Ridge)  a call on 0419985546 if you can help out this Sunday.

Remember, entry to Tarella and the Hobby’s Reach Research Centre is free for all members, so, if you haven’t visited Tarella in a while, it would be a nice way for you to spend an hour or so. Look through Tarella, have a cup of tea/coffee and chat with other members and visitors.

BMHS Public Meeting and Talk

July 6 2024 @ 10:30 am – 12:00 pm

Showgirl’s Luck and the old Lapstone Hotel is the

title of our talk on Saturday, 6 July 2024.  John Lanser will talk on the making of Australia’s earliest talkie, which was filmed, commencing in 1930, at the old Lapstone Hotel. John will accompany his talk with clips from the film. John has previously given well received talks on the history of the Catalina Park Raceway and the radio station 2KA.  Don’t miss his talk on Saturday 6 July 2024.

Society Excursion – Wednesday 17 July 2024

Our next bus excursion is to ANSTO at Lucas Heights on July 17 @ 8:30 am – 5:00 p.m. We have booked a guided tour of ANSTO, the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation based at Lucas Heights.  It is responsible for the operation of Australia’s only nuclear reactor.

The cost of the excursion is $40 including bus fare and tour fee. The tour of ANSTO commences at 11am, so the bus will have to depart promptly from the Blue Mountains Historical Society at 8.30am to ensure our timely arrival at Lucas Heights.

PLEASE NOTE: For security reasons, we must submit a picture to ANSTO of an ID document for each participant PRIOR to our arrival. If you wish to come on the excursion you must send Chris Webber a copy of an id document containing your photo (eg, driver’s licence). Please contact Chris to book a place on the bus and to organise his receipt of your ID. Email him at or phone him : 0424 720 676.

BMHS Membership Renewal

Thank you very much to those many BMHS members who have already renewed their membership for the 2024/2025 year.

It has been particularly pleasing to see the number of members who have used the new BMHS website to complete their renewal form and pay the annual fee through our new online shop facility.

Membership renewal is now due as we approach the end of June.

A copy of the Renewal Form is attached to this news bulletin for your information and use.

If you choose to enter your details into the Online Renewal Form on our website, click submit after completing the form and it is emailed automatically to the Society. Clicking submit on the this form will  then take you to a further page, where you can choose to pay your annual fee online or just be reminded of the other payment methods.

If you use the online Renewal Form and click submit, there is no need to send us a further completed version of the attached renewal form.

Just a reminder that, if you choose to pay your membership fee using EFT (direct debit) from your financial institution, please make sure that you include your name in the description section so that we can see who has paid us.

We greatly value your continued support of the Society by maintaining your membership. Without this support, the Society would, quite simply, not be able to continue to operate to preserve and tell the story of the Blue Mountains.

Thank you again for this support.
